waneek30″ x 40″, Acrylic on canvas, 2005

This is a painting of the native Olympian Waneek Horn. This image appeared on Time magazine during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Australia. Some people said it was pornographic when she posed for Time magazine, I couldn`t believe it, How come they ain`t complaining about all them naked white women that plaster the magazine stands. I totally think they said that because she was native, The Canadian water polo team didn’t treat her to well either. But I don`t don`t care about all that, Waneek Horn was always inspiring to me and I am always ready to portray a strong native woman. This past year she surprised me by e-mailing me, it was fantastic, I never thought I would get a personal e-mail from someone such as her. Thank You Waneek! – Riel Benn
